🎥 Voices from the Tackling Poverty Assembly

Part 13 – Sumeyra Sahin | Refugee Kindness

As part of our continuing coverage of the Wrexham Poverty Action Collaboration (WPAC) Tackling Poverty Assembly, we’re sharing the voices, experiences and ideas that are helping shape community-led action to tackle poverty across North East Wales.

Each presentation helps build a fuller understanding of both the challenges people face and the strengths that already exist within our communities.

The latest speaker in our series is Sumeyra Sahin from Refugee Kindness, whose contribution focused on something often overlooked in conversations about poverty—the willingness of communities to help one another.

Working closely with refugees, asylum seekers and families experiencing hardship, Refugee Kindness regularly asks local people to donate household items, clothing, furniture, food and practical support.

Sumeyra reflected on how encouraged she has been by the response.

Time after time, when help has been needed, people across Wrexham have stepped forward to offer what they can.

Her presentation served as a reminder that while many organisations are responding to increasing levels of need, they are also supported by communities that continue to demonstrate remarkable generosity and compassion.

Throughout the Tackling Poverty Assembly, speakers highlighted the importance of community organisations, volunteers and local residents working together.

Sumeyra’s message reinforced that community kindness is not simply a positive story—it is one of the strengths that helps people navigate difficult times and build stronger, more connected neighbourhoods.

Over the coming weeks we’ll continue sharing presentations from community leaders, organisations and people with lived experience who contributed to the Assembly.

Together these voices are helping build a clearer understanding of poverty across North East Wales while celebrating the compassion and resilience that already exists within our communities.
