Wrexham Ffair – Day 2: Friday 18 September
Belonging, sanctuary, creativity and community
Day 2 of Wrexham Ffair brings another day of activities across Lle Hapus and Wrexham Sewing Studio – with opportunities to learn, create, meet people and think about what it means to belong.
And on Friday, we are particularly pleased to welcome City of Sanctuary, whose work connects directly with the ideas behind TCC’s Belonging in Our Community campaign.
Speak Up for Sanctuary
From 11.30am, City of Sanctuary will be at Lle Hapus with their Speak Up for Sanctuary workshop.
City of Sanctuary’s Speak Up for Sanctuary programme is about helping people recognise their ability to make change, speak up for refugee rights and build welcoming and compassionate communities. It also provides practical ways to challenge misinformation and have constructive conversations about refugee rights and migration.
That feels particularly relevant to Wrexham right now.
The city has a history of community action around sanctuary, including the launch of the Wrexham Town of Sanctuary campaign in 2019. So City of Sanctuary’s presence at Wrexham Ffair is part of an existing local story – people in Wrexham coming together to think about what kind of community we want to be.
And that is at the heart of Belonging in Our Community.
Who are we?
It is easy to concentrate on the things that make us different.
Different backgrounds.
Different countries of birth.
Different languages.
Different cultures and traditions.
But what happens when we start with what we have in common?
Families.
Friendships.
Hopes for the future.
Wanting our children to be safe and happy.
Wanting to contribute.
Wanting to be treated fairly.
Wanting to feel that we belong.
We have more in common than we think.
The Speak Up for Sanctuary workshop offers an opportunity to explore some of these questions, have conversations and think about how each of us can play a part in creating a welcoming community. City of Sanctuary describes the programme as helping people to speak with confidence, challenge misinformation safely and build understanding through constructive conversations.
You don’t need to be an expert.
Come along. Listen. Talk. Ask questions.
Groundwork
From around 2pm, Groundwork North Wales will be bringing a taster activity to Lle Hapus.
The exact activity is still being confirmed, so we don’t want to give away something that isn’t finalised – but Groundwork has a strong track record of working with communities across Wrexham and North Wales.
Its work includes community learning, volunteering, environmental projects and activities designed to help people develop skills, confidence and connections. Groundwork is currently delivering adult community learning opportunities across Wrexham and Flintshire, including taster and engagement courses.
So there should be plenty of opportunity to have a go, learn something and meet people.
Get creative at Wrexham Sewing Studio
There’s also plenty happening at Wrexham Sewing Studio.
From 12 noon, you can get involved with zip-making, zips, beads and colouring workshops.
It’s another example of what we want Wrexham Ffair to be about: not simply coming along to watch something, but having the opportunity to join in and make something yourself.
And then… quiz night!
After a busy afternoon, it’s time to put the thinking caps back on.
From 5.30pm, Wrexham Sewing Studio will be hosting a Quiz Night, running through the evening.
Bring your friends, bring your competitive spirit and see how you get on!
